Evening light presents a particular challenge in painting. As the landscape begins to darken, even subtle shifts in the sky can suddenly feel incredibly luminous.

For this month's demonstration, I'll be painting an evening marsh scene and exploring how value, color temperature, edges, and contrast work together to create that sense of light.

We'll begin by simplifying the scene into its largest shapes and establishing the value structure before moving into the color of the sky, clouds, distant landscape, reflections, and marsh. Throughout the painting, I'll explain not only what I'm doing, but why I'm making those decisions and how they affect the sense of light and atmosphere.

During the demonstration, we’ll explore:

Creating luminosity without relying on white
Building clouds with a sense of volume and atmosphere
Using value, color temperature, and edges to create depth
Painting reflections that feel connected to the sky
Simplifying the marsh while maintaining a convincing sense of place
